Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an effective way to remove the superficial, thin
red to purple blood vessels often found on the thighs and legs.
Also known as spider veins, they are sometimes the result of venous
backflow and may be connected to large soft tortuous varicose veins.
Although sclerotherapy can be used to treat some of the larger caliber
vessels it is most effective on the thread like spider veins.
Sclerotherapy can be performed in the office and requires no anesthetic
or recovery time. It involves injecting a solution (most often concentrated
saline) directly into the fine vein. The needle used is extremely
thin and produces little to no pain. Upon injection the solution
displaces the blood and coats the blood vessel wall. This initiates
a scarring process which results in the blood vessel collapsing
on its self and being absorbed by the body over several weeks. The
hypertonic saline solution is quickly diluted in the blood stream
and posses no health risk.
Side effects are are few but may include a mild ache or superficial
sore at the injection site. Several days after the procedure the
vein appears as a brownish smudge or bruise. This may take several
weeks to resolve. Although one treatment will usually show visible
results, sclerotherapy may need to be repeated after 6 weeks.
