Laser Removal of Tattoos

Tattoo removal by laser is safe and very effective
however it is a slow process that is expensive and requires a lot
of patience!
When the laser beam strikes the skin its primary target
is the tattoo ink globule. The beam shatters the ink into smaller
globules. Your body then sends out immune cells that try and digest
these smaller pieces. This process is usually repeated until all
of the fragments are small enough to be removed. It is important
to understand that multiple treatments are required and it is impossible
to predict exactly how many visits ahead of time.

Tattoos are made by placing large pigment
globules (ink) into the dermal, or deeper, portion of
your skin. When you were healing from the tattoo you
may remember thin scabs of ink that fell off. This represents
ink left in the upper part of the skin or epidermis that
is being “rejected” by your body. The ink
that remains is too deep to be extruded through the top
of the skin and too large to be flushed out by your body’s
immune system.

Dark skinned patients are also candidates for tattoo
laser removal but there is an extra precaution that should be discussed.
Although the laser’s primary target is the ink globule it
may mistakenly destroy normal skin pigment This means that although
the tattoo may fade so may the normal skin color. This may or may
not be reversible.
The laser used in this
office targets blue, black and green inks. Red, pink, white
and yellow pigments are not effectively removed although they
may fade to an extent (again, it is hard to
predict). Multi-color tattoos usually require more treatment
because they do not respond as effectively as a simple black
or blue tattoo. It is also important to realize that tattoo
artists may mix different inks to produce
a more
vibrant color.
For
example, a green tattoo may contain yellow or white ink. Because
of this
variability, each result cannot be predicted or guaranteed
